As many of you know, I was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. From the time that I was a teenager, Pat Summit was the head coach of Tennessee women’s basketball. She has been a pillar in Knoxville for years in addition to being the winningest coach in college basketball. She has been instrumental in advancing women’s college basketball and women’s college sports in general. Yesterday, she made a big announcement–between the end of last season and now, she has gone to the Mayo Clinic and has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, presumably Alzheimer’s type. Please take the time to watch her short video. Again, this just goes to show that dementia can affect anyone at almost any age. Coach Summit is 59.
2016 Update: Pat Summit dies at 64. She will be remembered and missed.
