The Fourth of July is a time for family, friends, and celebration, but it can also be one of the most stressful and dangerous holidays for our pets. Read our tips for protecting your furry family member

Did you know that more pets go missing during the July 4th holiday than at any other time of the year?

Animal shelters report a 30% to 60% increase in lost pets in the days surrounding Independence Day because frightened animals often run away when they hear fireworks. Even pets that have never shown fear before can panic unexpectedly.

Keep your furry family members safe this holiday by:

• Keeping them indoors before fireworks begin.
• Creating a quiet, comfortable room with calming music or white noise.
• Making sure ID tags and microchip information are current.
• Walking pets earlier in the day, before temperatures rise and festivities begin.
• Providing plenty of fresh water and shade if they are outside, and never leaving them in a parked vehicle.
• Keeping barbecue foods, alcohol, fireworks, glow sticks, and sparklers out of reach.
• Asking your veterinarian about calming products or medications if your pet has severe anxiety.
