AI has certainly been in the spotlight over the past few weeks. It has dominated many news stories and discussions. It has become a tool many of us rely on daily, and at the same time, concerns about AI taking over jobs and taking on a life of its own are understandable.
Last spring, we wrote about some of our interactions with potential and current clients who used AI platforms for legal advice. We understand how tempting that is, since we use AI in so many other parts of our lives. However, the human element of elder law is essential.
Years of education and ongoing training can’t be replicated with a few clicks on a computer screen. Experience with Georgia’s specific laws and family-specific situations can’t be reduced to a single mold.
When Skilled Care Is Needed
When families come to Hurley Elder Care Law because their loved one is in the hospital and can no longer return home because they need highly skilled care, AI won’t lay out next-step options for the family. AI also can’t put the pieces together for Medicaid planning when the family is concerned about their loved one’s home and other assets. This requires an experienced, specially trained human to create a plan that includes the care the loved one needs and the best way to pay for it while protecting assets.
Probate Questions
Probate is another topic our intake specialists receive calls about daily. The probate process can vary depending on the deceased person’s estate plan and circumstances. While probate laws are set at the state level, procedures and court practices can differ from county to county.
Experience Matters
There is no denying that AI is here and will be an important part of our future. However, use it to find a new restaurant or book an airline flight; don’t depend on it for important life decisions. The time and money you initially save by relying on your computer search results may end up costing you days and thousands of dollars.
