Nurses play an important role in patients’ lives. Many times we see clients overwhelmed with gratitude for the care their nurses provide. Our clients are often surprised to learn that we have a registered nurse (RN) on our staff. We find that this adds tremendous value to our clients and to our firm in general. Dawn Houston, R.N. is one of our care coordinators. If you encounter her in the field, you will see that she consistently displays the core values of nursing: caring; integrity; diversity; and excellence. We had some fun with Dawn and asked her some of our favorite questions:
What is your favorite word? HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. A HIPAA is a signed legal document that grants access to a patient’s health information. Our clients often choose to grant our firm access through this document in order to allow us to examine medical information so that we can best assist with their care needs.
What is your favorite sound? The sound of nature while sitting on my back porch. I love to hear the birds chirping and the wind rustling through the trees. I have a screened in porch that I sit in every afternoon after I come home from work. It is my way of winding down.
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt? When I was in middle school I thought I wanted to be a lawyer and then become Secretary of State so I could travel the world. At Hurley Elder Care Law, I get to combine being a nurse and working in the legal field. Since both professions are about helping people, I think I have the perfect job.
What is the best part of being a nurse? Having that “RN” behind my name has opened many doors for me. I feel so fortunate to have a career that allows me to help people in their time of need. No matter what type of nursing I have been involved in, I have been able to get a sense of satisfaction knowing that I have helped a person, a family, or a community.
Who is your favorite character on TV? Carol Hathaway and Alicia Florrick, both characters played by Julianna Margulies. They have careers that I would enjoy. Years ago I would watch “ER” with my oldest son each week. I wanted to be a nurse like Carol and be able to help people when they needed it the most. I wanted to be able to solve problems, do hands on nursing, and see them go home or admitted to the hospital where they would get additional help. ER nursing did not work out for me, but apparently, this show influenced my son more than I knew. He is now a board certified emergency medicine physician!

All I can say is Wow ! I have never seen a team attack and solve a problem like Hurley. We lost our father and two weeks later our mother suffered a severe stroke. Nursing home costs were draining their life savings, but Hurley found a solution and got things under control.
