2024 is in the rearview mirror

This past month has been a whirlwind for me. Between the end-of-year rush to wrap up projects at work, making critical decisions for my aging mother in rehab, keeping up with holiday festivities, and managing a disruptive and time-consuming home construction project, life has felt chaotic. While I may feel like I’ve earned the title of “busiest person” among my friends, I know many others are navigating their own challenges, leaving them feeling equally unsettled.  2024 is in the rearview mirror and it has been quite a year.

It’s been quite a year!

Our home construction project has turned many of our evenings into a marathon of cleaning out closets, moving furniture, selecting paint and flooring, and making endless trips to Goodwill. Occasionally, my husband and I take a much-needed break to enjoy a holiday gathering. Despite our exhaustion when we finally collapse into bed each night, there’s a growing sense of satisfaction.

Our closets are now filled only with items we actually wear (well, mostly), decades-old wedding gifts have found new homes and are no longer collecting dust on shelves, and our adult sons’ high school mementos have finally been cleared out. The thought of starting 2025 with a home that feels neat, updated, and organized has brought me an incredible sense of relief and peace.

Is it time for a refresh?

This process reminded me of another task that brings a similar sense of calm once it’s completed: updating our wills and estate plans. It’s easy to put off, as it may seem like an unpleasant chore. But the peace of mind that comes afterward is invaluable. Knowing that your loved ones won’t have to make significant and potentially difficult decisions during a crisis—or after your passing—is a priceless gift you can give them.

As we approach a new year, consider using this time to “refresh your house” by creating or updating your estate plan. Starting the year with this sense of preparedness can offer the same kind of relief as an organized home.
