A few notes from an early retiree, Jonathan Look, are passed on for your enlightenment. For his complete story you can check out his approach to retirement at: www.LifePart2.com. His paraphrased suggestions follow:
- With retirement, you have more time to do things you love, but the extra time is wasted unless you are using it productively and actually living your dreams.
- Phone or visit special people, mend fences, hug, show appreciation and be kind.
- Money is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
- You can’t turn back the clock so invest your time wisely.
- Be happy in the present. People are responsible for their own happiness.
- Do not defer your aspirations; life goes on while you are making plans. Take action to get the things you want.
- Do things because you want to without needing to justify them.
- The past is gone; don’t live a life of sorrow – come to terms.
- Stop complaining, it keeps negatives at the center of your life whereas optimism has a favorable impact on your future.
- Be satisfied; don’t let blind ambition cause you to lose sight of what is important.
- Take care of yourself; don’t forget your own importance.
- Expect success but remember we learn more from our failures than our successes.
- You don’t have to wait for an apology to forgive.
- Lastly, even though you are retired, you don’t have enough time for everything. Do the best you can and live your definition of a full life.
