Alzheimer’s Statistics

U.S. Statistics: Over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is estimated to total $259 billion in 2017, increasing to $1.1 trillion (in today’s dollars) by mid-century. Nearly one in every three seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

Georgia Statistics: The number of people 65 and older with Alzheimer’s – projected by year: In 2017 – 140,000; by 2020 – 150,000; by 2025 – 190,000. Percentage change from 2017 estimated at 7.1% by 2020 and 35.7% by 2025. Currently, 9,312 people are in hospice with a primary diagnosis of dementia, representing 22% of the total number. Medicaid costs of caring for people with Alzheimer’s in 2017, are $1,038 billion. The percentage change in Medicaid costs from 2017 to 2025 is projected at 48.7%. The number of deaths from Alzheimer’s in 2014 was 2,670. Alzheimer’s disease is the 6^th leading cause of death in Georgia; there has been a 116% increase in Alzheimer’s deaths since 2000. The number of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers along with hours of unpaid care and costs of caregiving for the year 2016 are: 519,000 caregivers; 591,000,000 hours of unpaid care; $7,478,000,000 total value of unpaid care; $283,000,000 higher health costs of caregivers.
