Over the past few weeks, we have shared tips on ensuring a successful holiday season with your aging loved one. It’s the perfect opportunity to observe changes in your loved ones’ health, including their hearing. Hearing loss is common as we age, and early detection and intervention can significantly affect quality of life.
Listen up!
Pay attention to how your loved one engages in conversations. Do they frequently ask for things to be repeated or respond inappropriately? Are they withdrawing from group discussions or appearing frustrated during gatherings? These could be signs of hearing difficulties.
Watch for increased volume on televisions or radios, which may indicate trouble hearing softer sounds. Additionally, observe if your loved one seems more fatigued after social interactions—straining to hear can be exhausting.
Options?
If you suspect hearing loss, approach the topic with compassion. You can express concern by saying, “I’ve noticed you’ve been asking people to repeat themselves lately. Are you having trouble hearing?” Encourage them to visit a hearing specialist for an evaluation.
