LGBTQ+ Seniors: Planning for Care, Finding Support and Understanding the Law

Joanna Hurley of Hurley Elder Care Law and Michael Johnson, LCSW, C-ASWCM, NCG of Metta Johnson & Associates, make up this dynamic duo of experts.

The generation that is entering the senior world is the same generation that started the Stonewall riots in 1969 – a turning point of LBGTQ rights in the United States. Significant strides have been made in the past 50 years, but LGBTQ seniors still have special needs and concerns as they age. Did you know LGBTQ people are twice as likely to age alone and may also have family members who have not been supportive or even disowned them? They are also four times less likely to have children to support them than their straight peers. Our professional panel will discuss legal and emotional issues facing LGBT seniors as they age. “Coming out” to family members and expressing their concern and need for care can be especially difficult for the LGBTQ community. This is a ‘must see’ discussion for LGBTQ adults and family members as we address these many important concerns. Let’s help make the complex process of aging more comfortable for all seniors!
