- Balance work with leisure time; you will find more satisfaction on the job.
- Embrace green therapy. Go outside, stand in the sun, let the wind mess up your hair and breathe deeply. You will feel restored and have an improved mental performance.
- Take a time out. Don’t rush in the morning while showering, for a more peaceful start to the day. Set your bedroom clock 12 minutes fast. Relieve the stress that builds when you think you don’t have time to do something.
- Downsize emotional reactions. Look at the big picture but don’t let it overwhelm you. In the first emotional rush of an upsetting moment, remember to adjust your perspective and lessen the emotional intensity.
- Rethink the closet. Some people collect clutter to make up for a sense of loss in other areas of their lives. Remember that clutter does not minimize losses; fill a couple of bags with donations and feel better about yourself.
- Find more teachers. Learn from those who know more than you do. Expand your knowledge by seeking out things you have always wanted to know.
- Take the short view. Keep control and don’t imagine the worst that can happen. Stay in the present. You can always devise a strategy to improve a situation that confronts you if you keep a clear head, knowing you are OK right now. From Patricia Corrigan, www.nextavenue.org
