The new year does not require perfection

Like many of you, I am finding this week feels a little quieter. The holidays are behind us, the calendar is fresh, and there is space to reflect. While New Year’s resolutions often get a bad reputation, I do believe there is value in pausing to consider what we can do differently moving forward. With that in mind, I wanted to share a few personal goals I am setting for my own well-being this year.

Caregiving

I am a long-distance caregiver for my mom, who lives in assisted living in Florida. As her healthcare agent and financial power of attorney, I handle everything from doctor appointments and transportation to pharmacy needs and bills. It is meaningful work, but it can also feel like a second full-time job. This year, I plan to have an honest conversation with my siblings about sharing more of these responsibilities. Caregiving works best as a team effort, and I have learned from our care coordination team that asking for help is an important form of self-care.

Legal Planning

It’s time for me to update my estate planning documents. A lot has changed since my last update. My sons are now adults, living independently, and better positioned to serve as backup decision makers. One is also getting married this spring, which introduces new family dynamics to consider. As we often remind clients, estate planning is not a one-time task. Life changes, and your documents should reflect that. I plan to follow my own advice this year.

Physical Health

I still love my Peloton rides, but I am becoming more aware of the importance of strength training as we age. Preventing falls, maintaining mobility, and protecting long-term health all matter more than ever. This year, my husband and I decided we would work with a trainer to build strength safely and confidently. I am also increasingly interested in the growing body of research on lifestyle and cognitive health, and I look forward to sharing more on that in a future post.

The new year does not require perfection. Sometimes it just calls for intention.
