Each May, we recognize National Elder Law Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the unique legal and financial issues impacting older adults and their families. This year’s theme, “Protecting Rights, Fighting Scams,” shines a spotlight on one of the fastest growing threats facing seniors today: financial fraud and exploitation.
Scams targeting older adults have become increasingly sophisticated, emotionally manipulative, and financially devastating. Criminals are constantly adapting their tactics, using fear, urgency, technology, and even personal relationships to gain trust and steal money. Unfortunately, we are seeing more families contact our office after a loved one has already become a victim.
Protecting older adults from financial abuse
At Hurley Elder Care Law, helping protect older adults from financial abuse is an important part of what we do. Elder law attorneys are uniquely positioned to help families put legal protections in place, recognize warning signs, and intervene when vulnerable individuals are at risk.
Last summer, we dedicated an entire four-part blog series to educating families on common scams targeting seniors and how to reduce the risk of exploitation. We covered topics including romance scams, Social Security scams, funeral scams, and the importance of strong passwords and cybersecurity practices.

We also offer a free on-demand webinar titled Scam Defense Plan, designed to help families learn to identify red flags, intervene when something feels off, and better protect vulnerable loved ones from financial abuse.
Using real-life stories and the latest scam tactics, this webinar provides practical tools families can use immediately to stay one step ahead.

Five Simple Steps Families Can Take to Help Prevent Scams
While no one can eliminate every risk, there are several proactive steps families can take to help protect aging loved ones from fraud:
- Encourage open conversations about money and scams
Many seniors feel embarrassed after being targeted or fear losing independence if they admit something happened. Creating a judgment-free environment can make it easier for loved ones to speak up before a situation escalates.
- Slow down urgent financial decisions
Scammers rely on panic and pressure. Encourage loved ones to pause before sending money, sharing information, or clicking unfamiliar links. A quick phone call to a trusted family member can prevent major losses.
- Strengthen passwords and account security
Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication whenever possible. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts and be cautious about sharing login information.
- Monitor financial activity regularly
Review bank statements, credit card activity, and unusual purchases or withdrawals. Early detection can significantly reduce financial damage.
- Reduce isolation and increase support
Loneliness is one of the biggest risk factors for scams, especially romance scams. Regular check-ins, social engagement, and trusted support systems can help reduce vulnerability.
Staying One Step Ahead
Scammers are constantly evolving, which means education and awareness are more important than ever. Families who stay informed and proactive are often better equipped to recognize warning signs before significant damage occurs.
National Elder Law Month serves as an important reminder that protecting older adults goes beyond legal documents. It also means safeguarding their dignity, independence, and financial security.
In next week’s blog, we will discuss legal tools that may help protect vulnerable loved ones from financial exploitation, including the importance of a Durable Financial Power of Attorney and when guardianship or conservatorship may be necessary.
