This week, Dolly Parton turns 80, and, like so many others, I find myself marveling not just at the milestone but at how far she has come. What are her secrets to staying vibrant, purposeful, and joyful? She is still working, still giving to others, and still unmistakably “Dolly”.
What’s Dolly’s secret sauce?
As I’ve committed to living a more intentional (not perfect) life in 2026, reading about what Dolly credits for her health, happiness, and longevity felt especially grounding. In a recent article, she shared habits that seem simple but hold remarkable wisdom: waking early, staying spiritually grounded, moving her body in joyful ways, practicing moderation instead of deprivation, and surrounding herself with love, faith, and purpose.
Dolly’s life teaches us that aging gracefully isn’t about fighting against time, but about embracing how we live through it. She works hard, yet she also finds joy in simple pleasures. She values routine but not strictness. She honors her roots, her marriage, her faith, and her community, never equating success with fulfillment. And perhaps most inspiring of all, she counts her blessings instead of dollars.
Finding partners you can trust
However, Dolly is recognized as an extraordinary businesswoman. An interesting 2020 Billboard magazine article details her intentional career success, including the trust of close business associates and her late husband, Carl. The article quotes her view on estate planning, “I would not want to leave that mess to somebody else,” Parton says, before offering a little advice. “A word to all the other artists out there: If you haven’t made those provisions, do that. You don’t want to leave that mess to your family for people to have to fight over. You need to take care of that yourself, even if it’s a pain in the ass — and it is.”
