The holidays are a time for togetherness — sharing meals, laughter, and meaningful conversations. Amid the joy, it’s also the perfect opportunity to talk with aging loved ones about a growing concern: scams targeting older adults. With fraud schemes becoming more sophisticated, protecting loved ones from scams by taking time now to educate and prepare can protect those you care about most.
Ask the question
You can start by gently opening the conversation. Ask if they’ve received any unusual calls, texts, or emails lately. Many scams involve impersonating government agencies (like the IRS, Social Security, etc.), banks, or even family members. Encourage them never to share personal information or send money without verifying the source. Reassure them that asking for help is not a burden. It’s a smart way to stay safe, and you’re happy to help.
A useful gift?
Consider giving practical tools that provide protection. Caller ID devices that block robocalls, password managers that secure logins, and credit monitoring subscriptions can help prevent fraud. Some smart home assistants can even be configured to screen calls or alert someone if suspicious messages are received. A list of recommended landline blockers can be found HERE. Remind your loved ones never to answer a phone call from someone whose number they don’t recognize.
Check the settings
Privacy settings are another important layer of protection. Review their social media accounts and online shopping profiles to make sure information like birthdays and addresses isn’t public. Help set up two-factor authentication and keep software updated regularly.
Have a worthwhile conversation
By combining open dialogue, smart technology, and proactive safety measures, families can make the holidays not only warm and joyful but also safe. Having a few thoughtful conversations now could protect your loved ones from serious financial and emotional harm later.
