UTIs in Aging Adults: What You Need to Know

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in older adults and can have serious consequences if left untreated. While younger people may easily recognize the symptoms, UTIs in aging adults often present differently and can be mistaken for other conditions, especially dementia.

What Is a UTI?

A UTI is an infection in any part of the urinary system, most often the bladder, urethra, or kidneys, caused by bacteria in most cases.

Common Symptoms in Older Adults:

  • Frequent urination or a sudden, strong urge to go
  • Pain or burning while urinating
  • Cloudy, dark, or bloody urine
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Fever, chills, or fatigue
  • Sudden confusion or behavioral changes

UTIs and Dementia

UTIs can trigger delirium, a rapid onset of confusion or agitation that is often mistaken for a progression in dementia. If a loved one with dementia shows a sudden behavior change, a UTI could be the cause. Because those with cognitive decline may struggle to express how they feel, it’s essential to recognize the signs and seek prompt medical attention.

The Impact of Untreated UTIs

If not treated, UTIs can lead to kidney infections, worsening of chronic health conditions, or even hospitalization. Infections, including UTIs, may also accelerate the progression of dementia.

A Special Note on Older Women

Postmenopausal women are particularly vulnerable to UTIs. According to the National Library of Medicine, one in ten women aged 65 and older experiences at least one UTI yearly. For women over 85, that number rises to nearly one in three.
