Christmas is less than a week away! The holiday season often brings us together from near and far to celebrate. While this is a joyous time, this reunion can also be unsettling and cause for concern due to noticeable health and cognition changes in our loved ones. What changes should you keep an eye out for at an upcoming holiday reunion?
Cognitive changes
Some common cognitive changes which can be seen are rapid forgetting or difficulties navigating, solving common problems, expressing oneself in conversation or behaving outside of social rules. Many of these changes can occur over time and are difficult to notice through short phone conversations from distant family. They can become quite evident when spending one on one time over several days during the holiday visit.
Keeping up appearances
Some other common issues of decline adult children may notice with their parents are changes in their health and hygiene. Has there been a change in weight since the last time you visited? Is their home dirty, unkempt, and low on food? Do you notice balance or dizziness issues which may cause falls? Are there unexplained cuts and bruises? These are all indications that your parent may need additional care assistance and further medical attention.
We’re here to help
Our team at Hurley Elder Care Law gets an onslaught of phone calls in January from concerned loved ones who realize they need to step in and help their parents make some changes in the new year. The common thread in these calls is realizing the importance of managing risk for the aging adult. Our attorneys and public benefits team can assist with legal and financial decisions and our care coordinators are a wonderful source of community resources and can identify and help arrange care options. December is a great time to enjoy family time and check on the older people in your life. Don’t forget to touch base with your aging neighbors and friends who may not be spending time with their loved ones. They will appreciate your love and support. Happy Holidays from your friends at Hurley Elder Care Law.
